“Practically everyone in my family is a member of the UBC alumni, so I knew the educational quality of a UBC program would be high,” says Steve Harris, a graduate of the Certificate in Web Intelligence, a program offered jointly by UBC Continuing Studies and the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Extension.
Steve had been working in information systems, web development and digital strategy for about eight years before he began the program. One day in 2007 he picked up a copy of Avinash Kaushik’s book Web Analytics, An Hour A Day, and learned about the online web analytics courses offered by UBC Continuing Studies. “Up until that point, my knowledge of business analysis and marketing were acquired organically -- on the job -- so when I saw the opportunity to fill in that knowledge with some academic studies, I jumped at it.”
The Certificate in Web Intelligence is a 100% online program which includes the four courses that comprise the UBC Award of Achievement in Web Analytics plus two elective courses offered through UCI Extension. It provides a solid grounding in web analytics techniques plus knowledge of data warehousing, dimensional model design, business process improvement, management, leadership and team building, and related topics (topics depend on the elective courses chosen).
“My career path has definitely changed since completing the program,” explain Steve. “Most of my work previous to finishing the program was doing web analytics generally as a part of the Web development process. The program helped me realize that a career in digital analytics and business intelligence plays much more directly into my interests and academic background. To me, it’s the perfect blend of technology, statistics, business, marketing and social science research.”
Steve currently heads the Analytics and Research team at Entrinsic, a strategic corporate social media agency. The Toronto-based company’s clients have included Google, Coca-Cola, vitaminwater, MoMA and the Bank of Montreal. Steve explains, “Analytics and insight are the cornerstone of everything we do; my team works as a resource across the entire organization. I often work with the analytics specialists of our clients as well, so the wide breadth of knowledge I gained through the program has served me well.”
Since completing the program, Steve has also written and passed the Certified Web Analyst (CWA) exam offered by the Digital Analytics Association (formerly the Web Analytics Association). He credits the CWA designation as a useful credential that demonstrates his experience and knowledge of the subject area, and differentiates him from other practitioners of related fields.
While Steve’s CWA designation now distinguishes him in the field of web analytics, it’s his UBC education that gives him the alumni status in his own family.
