In her spare time, she's the lead singer of a 15-piece big band called Paper Moon, but by day Rochelle Grayson has her fingers on the pulse of the rapidly changing social media landscape.
Since 2008, Rochelle has been nominated as one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women's Executive Network and named one of Business in Vancouver's Top Forty under 40.
Currently the CEO of BookRiff Media Inc., she has spent the last ten years working with large entertainment companies such as MTV, Mattel and Warner Brothers to extend their audiences through multiple channels, including social media.
"Social media is a tool to engage consumers. It's a way of conversing, listening and exploring what people want. However, like traditional marketing, companies and organizations should think about a social media strategy and goals before launching activities with tools like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn," advises Rochelle.
With an MBA in Finance and Business Policy, Rochelle brings her knowledge and real-world experience to the courses she teaches in the UBC Award of Achievement in Social Media.
"I share real examples of what I've done and current trends with the class. Since the field is changing so quickly, it does not work to tell students how to do things, but rather get them to understand why which will naturally lead them to how," explains Rochelle. "I also hope to provide them with realistic expectations of what can be achieved through social media."
Rochelle feels the UBC Award of Achievement in Social Media program gives students in-depth knowledge about social media that goes beyond just launching a Twitter or Facebook campaign.
"Students are tested to think through why and how social media can benefit their business or organizational goals. Most importantly, they learn how to find the answers to the fast-changing questions that are commonplace in business today."
