With over 20 years of experience working in communications, Kathryn Hardy saw sustainability as a natural way to combine her professional background with her passion for the environment. “I’ve always been an environmentalist and became intrigued with the concept of sustainability. I had been thinking about a career change, and after visiting the UBC Continuing Studies website to learn more about the Sustainability Management program, I decided on the spot to sign up.”
The UBC Award of Achievement in Sustainability Management provided Kathryn with a solid foundation for carving out her place in the rapidly growing field. “The best part of getting involved in sustainability is being part of the change. The program is excellent if you want to learn not only about sustainability, but how you can become a leader in the huge paradigm shift to make our planet more sustainable.”
Students develop skills to help build sustainability into their organizations and communities. They learn how to approach new market opportunities and challenges, involve stakeholders, and effectively manage greenhouse gas emissions.
“All of the instructors were outstanding and the courses provided me with a sound, basic knowledge of sustainability leadership and best practices. In particular, I found the coursework in both Barriers to Sustainability and Embedding Sustainable Systems in Operations really helped tie everything together,” recalls Kathryn.
Completing the program has enabled Kathryn to act as a trusted advisor on sustainability management for business. She is currently working as a private consultant to help organizations explore sustainable options that will enable them to improve their triple bottom line, which includes economic, environmental and social responsibility. “Many business owners don’t realize that by making simple changes in their organizations, they will not only help make the planet more sustainable, they can also save money.”
As the field of sustainability evolves, Kathryn helps organizations navigate the changes necessary to build a more sustainable future.
