“Don’t fear the technology!” That’s Bonnie Bishop’s advice to students thinking of embarking on the UBC Certificate in Multimedia Studies. “The instructors are very knowledgeable and the program provides a great overview of the many aspects of multimedia technology such as web, audio and video, from content creation to distribution.”
Working as a freelance graphic designer, specializing in print design before she began the program, Bonnie was eager to gain more knowledge and add multimedia skills to her repertoire to extend her design talents online. She feels that the certificate program gave her the confidence to pursue her goal of developing a career as a web designer. “The most valuable thing I learned in the program was to be self-reliant, as well as to choose the appropriate software for particular design and media challenges,” she recalls.
The full-time UBC Certificate in Multimedia Studies consists of 16 weeks of classroom instruction and portfolio development, including three weeks of internship which gives students experience in producing multimedia projects for real companies and clients. The curriculum develops skills in design principles, business processes, technologies and creative techniques of multimedia. Bonnie says, “The web design and CSS coding I learned in the program have proven very useful in my professional work.”
As part of the program, Bonnie also took part in an internship at Kontent Creative in Vancouver. “I gained some very real-world, hands-on experience by drafting a website that incorporates a content management system. The experience taught me how to be resourceful and really built my confidence and web design skills.”
Shortly after completing the program, Bonnie was hired as a web designer for a professional agency which offers educational materials for interior designers, architects and government agencies. Her role has been to redesign several of the company’s many websites. “In my current work I am continuing to gain new skills pertaining to web design and, of course, I have the opportunity to utilize the many design, graphics and interactivity skills learned in the Multimedia Studies program,” she explains.
What’s next for Bonnie? “I plan to continue to explore web design and interactivity, as well as design for mobile devices.”
