UBC Certificate in Liberal Studies

   Program Overview

In this day and age when so much emphasis is put on learning a trade, or preparing ourselves for the technological age, many people have a sense of having missed out on the opportunity to study the arts, to savour the classics and to reflect on history, philosophy and our changing society. The UBC Certificate in Liberal Studies offers you a structured way to broaden your intellectual horizons and enrich your understanding of the arts and humanities.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the program offers a wide range of part-time courses and lectures, allowing you to sample learning in a variety of different subject areas, including history, literature, art, music, philosophy and public affairs.

  Who Should Take this Program?

Whether you took a degree in the sciences and now have time to luxuriate in the arts, always wanted to take a university degree but didn’t get around to it, want to broaden your horizons without having to jump through prerequisite hoops, or are just searching for a structured way to indulge your desire for intellectual stimulation, the UBC Certificate in Liberal Studies may meet your needs. This program was designed so participants may explore the arts and humanities in more depth than could be achieved by taking non-related single courses, but without having to commit to the expense and time needed to complete degree-credit courses.

We aim to take into consideration the diverse interests and needs of participants, as well as recognize their different backgrounds. There is a high expectation of self-sufficiency on the part of the student, but also an opportunity to proceed at your own pace.

  What Our Students Are Saying

"Prior to signing up for the Certificate in Liberal Studies I had attended three lectures. Although they were interesting and in some cases entertaining, I could not remember much about the details a few weeks later.

There is no doubt that having to produce an essay focuses my attention, and that with this focus comes real learning and long term satisfaction… The Certificate program to date has fulfilled my expectations and I look forward to the continuation of the process."

--- David Watson
Certificate Student

“Every instructor has been interesting. They go beyond formal teaching to make students as interested in the subject as they are. In some cases, the courses taken have prompted further individual study on my part… It is also great to know I can complete the certificate in my own time because I am still working.”

--- Carole Cameron
Certificate Student

“The certificate program more than met my expectations…I'm really glad I took that formal route rather than just taking various continuing education courses. The instructors were very enthused and that makes a great difference in an education experience. Writing papers is a lot of work but there is a whole lot of learning that takes place in the process.”

U.S. President Obama in outlining his plan for a major overhaul of the country’s education system urged states to develop standards “that don’t simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking ...”.
