From the Certificate in garden design to the university of guelph master of landscape architecture program (april 2010)
Kim Harper, a 2008 graduate of the Certificate in Garden Design has just finished her first semester of the Master of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Guelph.
In Kim’s words, “The garden design course at UBC was a great introduction to the process of design. The process of analysis, conceptual planning, design drawings and presentation is fundamental to any landscape designer. The course values the skill of hand drawings which many institutions seem to overlook. In my program at the University of Guelph, we too value hand drawings. As people rely more heavily on autocad, the notion of a unique hand drawing offers an edge. Presentation and critique play a huge role and having gained some experience from the program definitely helped prepare me for the many presentations this year. I would recommend this course to anyone who may be interested in pursuing a career in landscape architecture. It offers a good overview of the design process.”

Instructor and Graduate designs featured in Style at Home magazine
The article “A Welcome Change” in the May 2009 issue of Style at Home magazine features a design by 1997 graduate Colleen MacDonald (Sage Green Projects Inc). Colleen and garden designers from Toronto were invited to create alternative garden design concepts for the same suburban home. Colleen's plant choices are all suitable for an eco friendly Vancouver garden, eliminating most of the existing lawn and incorporating native plants that will require little “fuss” to maintain.
In the same issue (and on the front cover) is an outdoor room designed by Ron Rule, landscape architect and Program Director for the UBC Certificate in Garden Design.
BC Landscape & Nursery Association (BCLNA)
The UBC Certificate in Garden Design program is well represented in the BCNLA. Three of our graduates currently hold positions on a variety of BCLNA committees. Gabriela Adamov is a member of the BC Landscape Awards of Excellence committee. Laurie Anderson (Anderson Garden Services Inc) chairs the BCLNA Landscape Executive Committee, and Colleen MacDonald (Sage Green Projects Inc) is a member of the Executive committee and of the Environment committee.
